If a guy calls a girl he doesn’t know “sweetheart” in a situation where he doesn’t know her yet, I’m willing to understand that he THINKS he’s being kind and affectionate and doesn’t mean any harm. But what the guy doesn’t understand is that the terminology he’s using is loaded with implications of intimacy and relationship depth, so to use it on a lady he doesn’t know is pretty invasive.

He may think he’s being kind like “Oh hey, here is a nice girl working hard, I think I will show her that I appreciate her by calling her something affectionate.” But that kind of affection hasn’t yet been earned, it’s just kind of running up to her all in her face like “Hey, my way of being kind to you is making a barely veiled appraisal of your attractiveness to me, the only way I know to speak positively to a lady is as if I already knew her as a relationship partner.”

It reduces a woman to a small, subservient little object that he presumes a claim over, whether he’s conscious of doing it or not. And it’s not a thing that a woman has to put up with, honestly.

If an older lady calls me sweetheart though I usually assume it’s ‘cause I’m so darn cute.

I mean the relationship between men and women is different. We can connect to women, even like strangers who are female over the internet, more than men so it’s not very threatening or anything if a lady’s like hey honey how’re you doing

Well, yeah.

That goes without saying.

It’s still kind of annoying in internet arguments though.
