ncgh asked: let's get to what's really important: joel robinson or mike nelson?
Joel. No disrespect at all to Mike, who was also great and wonderful, but Joel was the first host I was exposed to, and I enjoyed his invention exchanges and his chill, laid back attitude. And he was a daddy to the bots, which I think is really sweet.
Also he signed my sketchbook.
the guys DA page is lit up like a fucking xmas tree with artists upset over this.
I wouldn’t even be a little surprised if he started banning them all.
It’s not like he doesn’t already have a history of that sort of thing.
wow what is up with these art sites and shitty administration
RealitySquared has been a shitty admin on DeviantArt for a long time, but since his shittiness is usually restricted to banning less popular artists for crimes like “complaining that another artist is tracing” or “probably being from 4chan” or “giving a more popular artist a hard time,” the DA userbase doesn’t complain about him the way that FA bitches about Dragoneer, who hired a fucking rapist to be a coder.
I was permabanned without any kind of chance for appeal back in 2006 for linking a recreation of a work by a DeviantArt user called Chasethehedgehog, because it was assumed I was part of a raid by /b/. He was squatting on Chase’s page, permanently banning anyone who so much as teased the dude. I created a sockpuppet account warning people about this on Chase’s shoutbox, and slipped up, also getting it banned. I found out that Chase wasn’t reporting any of these people. RealitySquared took it upon himself to quash anybody commenting negatively on the page of a dude who drew images like this:
I was talked into making another account by friends of mine, and I was obviously hesitant to do so, because it was against the rules to make a new account. RealitySquared found that too in the slip-up.
That original account I had was deleted. Hundreds of comic strips that I didn’t have backed up anywhere else were just gone. RealitySquared’s response was less than sympathetic, saying I should have backed them up. I had broken the rules, because I might have been from 4chan and asked Chasethehedgehog if I was in the top 10% of artists for doing a redraw of one of his works.
This was it. This was the re-draw that got me permanently banned from DeviantArt.
This was what I had done that was grievous enough to give me, somebody who had given money to the site and had no previous violations on my record, the boot. Permanently.
There were other artists that were in on the fun of poking fun at this guy’s work, mostly because of his attitude towards other artists (in that they sucked and he was better than them), but they were given a pass because either they were current premium members, or they were popular enough that RS didn’t feel the need to do anything to them.
What’s nuts is that a year later, after my previous accounts had been banned and had all their work deleted, the April Fool’s Day Mudkips prank happened, changing everybody’s avatars into pixel mudkips. Previously RS had banned people for even saying “so i herd u liek mudkips,” and was almost hyper-vigilant towards any kind of meme references. A few years after that, internet infamous artist Zeriara, who had been banned years before, was allowed back on the site even after being reported because RealitySquared felt that it had been long enough, and that she had changed.
Mind you, Zer has an extensive history of harassing other artists, ripping people off, stealing ideas from other artists, and drawing hate art of people depicting artists who were victims of rape being raped. That’s not even touching the shit she’s done IRL. But no, Zer was given a second chance.
The art on his profile is also heavily referenced, and used to include one drawing of a white tiger that was an almost exact replica of a photograph that appears on the very first page of Google image search results for “white tiger.” But that drawing has since gone into storage. This wouldn’t be that bad by itself, but a lot of people noted the that it wasn’t surprising that a dude who’s that lenient on tracing and copyright infringement would have a submission in his gallery that was almost line-for-line, shade-for-shade an exact replica of a probably copyrighted photograph. There wasn’t any credit given for the reference, either.
I’M NOT BITTER.
